Light art Biennial Austria 2010

The first „Lightart Biennale Austria 2010“ is a non-commercial exhibition of lightart. There are light-artists as well as visual artists who uses light as an art-medium. The Biennale 2010 is using the slogan „private light in public spaces“.

The Lightart-Biennale Austria 2010 starts in autumn 2010 in Austria, consultant is Peet Thomsen (USA/Copenhagen/Linz) and the works are selected by a jury.

The start of the Biennale will be September 1st in Linz and September 4th 2010 in Perchtoldsdorf, with a final exhibition in Vienna in November 2010. We keep the public informed about the Biennale with a Blog, a Website and a planned printed catalogue. The submissions can be watched on www.lightart.posterous.com. Selected artists and exhibition spaces can be seen on www.lightart-biennale.at.

Curatorial Statement

Light Art Biennial Austria 2010 – “Private Art in Public Spaces”

I have been asked to be consultant for the Light Art Biennial in Austria. The Biennial is inspired by a similar Biennial, which will be held in the Ruhrgebiet. Austria’s theme for the first Biennial will be “Private Light in Public Spaces”. The name a gentle play on the German Light Art Biennial “Open Light in Private Spaces”

The name of the biennial describes the technical medium being used could also be interpreted in another manner. Light art – art without substance, this could be understood as unserious art. It could also be interpreted in another way. Art without substance is art about the immaterial. The object can be seen but never touched. But is it unserious? Milan Kundera wrote a book called “The Unbearable Lightness of Being” – And so comes the heavy part of the project. Light is about life – without light there is no life. The light of the sun fuels the planet. Light is a symbol used in churches for life itself. Some catholic churches begin their midnight Easter services in darkness. Then when the light of the rising sun comes through the stained glass window the worshippers light candles. The light then goes from one person to the next. This is how life and energy works. The seed of the man impregnates the woman and thus begins a new life. But the energy is there before. – the burning desire of the individuals for each other – this energy is the fuel of life. When we look to the sun as for example Olafur Eliasens: “Sun” at the Tate Modern we find calmness. We are reassured that everything is all right. So is it with light art – we find a space for solace and contemplation or just a pleasing view – whatever we find – we are enriched – such is the nature of light art.

Linz is the perfect venue for a departure into an area filled with light art. When you arrive in Linz by boat you are greeted by several great examples of light art. LentosArt Museum and Ars Electronica Center each on their own side of the Danube with light incorporated into their facades. Lentos the older building and is probably the inspiration for the facade of Ars is at night a pattern of blue light which at night with its reflection in the Danube is absolutely beautiful. The Ars Electronica Center with its every changing display is a real experience. But there are also other lights incorporated in the architecture, which are truly pleasing to the eye. The bridge across the Danube is also worth noticing. Thus with the palate wetted and greeted by the city of Linz we can step off the boat and begin to explore the city of Linz and the artworks placed into the public spaces by the artists of the festival.

The Austrian artist Kielnhofer created a slightly different light. His light sculptures are reminiscent of monks, nuns and / or to the Virgin Mary. The light sculptures are suitable for the lighting of building facades, balconies, parks, etc.

The light sculptures can also be used for the inner city balcony. The light guards are very visible, very effectively and ensure, in the dark and cold season for light and heat.
The illuminated art by Manfred Kielnhofer remember much “in introspective” monks, nuns and / or to the Virgin Mary. The life-sized sculptures are equipped with energy saving lamps 32W and are secured with ratchet straps on the railing. The sculptures are made luminescent and reflective.

Die Nationale Biennale für Lichtkunst Austria 2010 ist eine erstmals im Jahr 2010 stattfindende Ausstellung zeitgenössischer Kunst, bei der die Verwendung des Werkstoffes Licht im Vordergrund steht.

Allgemeines

Die erste „Nationale Biennale für Lichtkunst Austria 2010“ trägt das Motto „private light in public spaces“ und findet im Rahmen der Aktion LALA 2010 in Österreich statt. Der Name LALA steht für Linz (Austria) und Langenzersdorf (Austria), wo die beiden Initiatoren ihre Ateliers betreiben. Linz hat sich als Europäische Kulturhauptstadt 2009, mit dem Lentos, dem Ars Electronca Center und dem Brucknerhaus bereits gut in der kulturellen Landschaft etabliert.  Langenezersdorf hat mit dem Hanak-Museum und dem Charoux-Museum (Anton Hanak und Siegfried Charoux sind zwei bedeutende Österreichische Bildhauer) einen fixen Platz in der Österreichischen Museumslandschaft. Ab dem 13. April 2010 werden im Rahmen der Nationalen Biennale öffentliche Räume zu urbanenen Schauplätzen für internationale künstlerische Positionen. Dabei steht die Einfühlung der Künstler in die jeweiligen Situationen von Plätzen, Straßen, öffentlichen Gebäuden im Vordergrund, und nicht zuletzt die Bezugnehmung zu den Personen, die diese öffentlichen Plätze frequentieren oder in ihnen tätig sind. Bereits angefertigte Werke, die im individuell ausgewählten öffentlichen Raum in einen neuen Kontext gestellt werden, und neue, gerade erarbeitete Werke sind gleichermaßen möglich. Es werden die Schlagworte Lichtkunst, Öffentlichkeit und Privatheit in den Mittelpunkt des kuratorischen Interesses gestellt Die künstlerischen Leiter der ersten Nationalen Biennale für Lichtkunst Austria 2010 sind Martina Schettina aus Langenzersdorf und Manfred Kielnhofer aus Linz.

Ausstellungsorte

Die der Biennale als Schauplätze dienenden öffentlichen Plätze werden von den Künstlern selbst ausgewält.  Es gibt keinerlei Einschränkung, so dass jeder Künstler die maximal mögliche Bewegungsfreiheit für seine Arbeit vorfindet. Entsprechend heterogen ist auch die Reaktion der Passanten zu erwarten, die kurzfristig willentlich oder ungewollt zum Publikum werden. Auch der Kontakt mit Kunst kann bereits vertraut sein oder im Rahmen dieser Biennale erstmals geschehen.

Konzept

Diese erste Nationale Biennale für Lichtkunst in Österreich hat als ehrgeiziges Ziel die Konstruktion einer interdisziplinären Schnittstelle zwischen Gesellschaft und Kunst, die sich aus der Spontanität und dem temporären Zustand der Situation ergibt.  Mit der unerwarteten Konfrontation des Publikums mit  künstlerischen Positionen in öffentlichen Plätzen lehnt sich diese erste rein Österreichische Biennale für Lichtkunst mit internationaler Beteiligung zudem ganz bewusst an das Konzept der 1965 von Joseph Beuys in Düsseldorf durchgeführten Aktion „wie man dem toten Hasen die Bilder erklärt“ an, erlaubt doch die ‘unvoreingenommene Öffentlichkeit’’ den direkten Dialog von urbanem Leben mit der Kunst und umgekehrt.

Künstler

Unter den ausgewählten Künstlern für die künstlerischen Darstellung und die Vorstellung bereits existierender Werke finden sich sowohl spezielle Vertreter der Lichtkunst, als auch Künstler, die einmalig den Werkstoff „Licht“ als einen neuen Bestandteil in ihre Arbeit mit integrieren. Die Darstellung der gesellschaftlichen Phänomene und interdisplinären Prozesse durch bildende Künstler aller Sparten erreichen durch die Mitverwendung des Mediums “Licht” eine weitere Dimension.

Die Sponsoren sind in erster Linie Bund, Länder und Gemeinden, welche die öffentlichen Plätze, Gebäude und Straßen kostenlos zur Verfügung gestellt haben und weiterhin stellen. Weitere Sponsoren sind willkommen.

Öffnungszeiten, Besichtigungsmöglichkeit

Die  Öffnungszeiten von der Biennale 0-24 Uhr sind genauso außergewöhnlich, wie die Besichtigungsmöglichkeiten. Diese sind vom Zufall abhängig, da nicht vorausgesagt werden kann, wann und wo die Biennale-Künstler ihre Objekte realisieren und wie lange sie diese im öffentlichen Raum belassen.
